At Castletownroche N.S., we place great importance and emphasis on "Student Voice". We aim to empower students to participate meaningfully and collaboratively in improving their experience of school, encouraging their engagement in learning and improving teacher-student relationships.
In December of 2019, we went about forming the school's first ever Student Council with a series of elections held. Each candidate presented their own manifesto and a teacher supervised vote followed. Male and female candidates were selected from 4th, 5th and 6th class and a Student Council formed.
The Council meets with the Principal on a fortnightly basis and ideas, issues and initiatives are discussed. This has proven a vital conduit of student opinions and values and allows us to better understand childrens’ ‘unique perspectives on learning, teaching and schooling’ and recognises that ‘they should be afforded opportunities to actively shape their education’.
